The "Ah-Ha" Moment

Somewhere between the Anteater colonoscopy, collecting blood from Fruit Bats' patagial veins and debriding multiple wounds on a reticulated python, I found my place in veterinary medicine: The Zoo.

Everyday is a new challenge, a new species, a new problem to solve and in the case at the Cleveland Zoo a new audience to watch you while you work. I just completed a 4 week externship at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo in Cleveland, OH and I'm sad to see it end. The Doctors, Techs, Curators and Keepers gave me a fanatastic experience from which to build upon as I enter my final year rotations. I won't be able to go straight into zoo medicine right after graduation in June. But after a few years out in practice (whereever that may be...), completing an internship/residency, and crossing my fingers for a zoo vet to retire, I could be well on my way to the dream job. It's the job many vets dreamt about having. It's the kind of job that takes hard work and experience, for sure, but also knowing the right people and being in the right place at the right time.

If Elephants are good luck, then I hope elephants are in my future.
